Description

Built on 30 years of educational research, Lexia Reading® Core5® is a leading technology-based reading program for students of all abilities in pre-kindergarten through grade five. Designed to accelerate fundamental literacy skills development, the program provides an adaptive, personalized learning path for each student through a scaffolding approach and explicit instruction that supports students if they struggle. Each of the 18 levels of age-appropriate, skill-specific activities aligns to the most rigorous state standards, including the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The program simplifies differentiated instruction, enabling at-risk students to close the reading gap more quickly and on-level and advanced students to continue to progress.

Lexia Reading Core5 is available via web browser, as an app for the iPad® and Android devices, and as a desktop download, allowing for seamless integration into a variety of blended learning models. The program covers the five areas of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, automaticity/fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, as well as structural analysis. Throughout the program, students interact with complex text as they develop critical listening and reading comprehension skills. Its design creates personalized learning paths for every student, providing explicit instruction and immediate corrective feedback.

In the latest release, personalized learning is enhanced through a variety of new features. The new Student Dashboard enables students and parents to track progress towards personalized goals and promotes awareness and ownership of performance and progress. New differentiated content is also available in Lexia Lessons® to allow for more targeted materials across all grade levels.

For administrators and teachers, new streamlined navigation allows quicker access to targeted resources and search functionality, filters, scrolling, and bulk change capabilities help educators easily manage student and staff accounts from any device, anywhere.

To support even more English Language Learners, Lexia Reading Core5 provides directions in their native languages. In addition to Spanish, students can receive support in Mandarin, Haitian-Creole, Arabic, and Portuguese with Vietnamese and other languages coming soon.

Of particular interest to educators is Lexia's proprietary Assessment Without Testing® technology. As students work, the program gathers norm-referenced performance data--without stopping the flow of instruction to administer a test--and adjusts each student's learning path accordingly. Teachers and administrators receive real-time reports on individual student progress toward state and CCSS mastery, as well as reports indicating each student's probability of meeting end-of-year, grade-level benchmarks. Students are also able to track their own progress, and a newly redesigned activity selection screen increases student awareness of their skill completion.

Viewing and compiling performance data is important for educators to be able to respond to students' progress and implement data-driven instruction. To make students' assessment data more accessible to educators, Lexia has also recently introduced their new myLexia® app for Apple Watch™. This new offering delivers real-time data directly to the wrist of the educator. The immediate accessibility of students' information helps teachers decide when to give students extra time, when to offer help, and when to praise them for completing a level in the program.

Today more than 2 million students are currently improving their reading proficiency with Lexia, which has been nationally recognized and proven effective in six peer-reviewed, research-based outcome studies.

Review Highlights:

This is a relatively comprehensive database of reading activities that could be used at the elementary school level. It combines various learning techniques into one solid package. For example, the product effectively utilizes scaffolding via the chunking of information into manageable units in a way that caters to those who learn in visual, audio, and hands-on fashions. Interestingly enough, it feels as though it is the elementary school version of the General Records Examination (GRE). Use of the product at this level could easily result in students having a solid foundation in grammar, reading comprehension, and analytical skills. In short, this is an excellent program that can contribute to children gaining a mastery of language arts. It is also quite fun to use! I wish this program had been available when I was in elementary school!

As an elementary school teacher, I highly recommend this program. I am rallying to get it for my school. It's a solid foundational reading program. Students can work independently and at their own pace to reach mastery of each skill. It even predicts which students will meet end of year grade level benchmarks! A wonderful feature would allow me to spend more time with kids who need extra help and differentiate instruction. The whole program is aligned to common core and other state standards for reading. It's structured very nicely. Learning is sequential and builds on prior knowledge. The graphics kept the kids engaged. The 3rd grade reading curriculum covers spelling rules, Latin suffixes and prefixes, sight words, verbal analogies, classifying analogies, reading comprehension, and more. It's very much a standalone reading program.

I loved that it's cross-platform accessible - students can use an iPad or Android tablet, visit the website, or download it to their desktop.

The app uses pleasant sounds, the woman's voice providing feedback as you progress is soothing, and her response when an incorrect answer is clicked is always positive - "not quite, try again." I've seen a lot of software handle this situation poorly. Two thumbs up for Lexia Reading.
